Our Reviews

My Sons and I love this knife - Thank you

We have watched the YouTube vids and read the reviews. But…….. the first day I held a Buck 119 in my hand at the knife shop it felt so good and right I knew I instantly had to buy it. I have owned, sharpened and used countless different knives. I have worked in abattoirs, worked as a commercial fisherman and hunted and butchered game The 119 is so ergonomic and fits my hand so well it works like a seamless extension of my own hand. I love the palm swell and easy to clean smooth finish of the handle. I love the finger grooves and square shape that allows me to index the blade centre for accurate cutting. The 420HC stainless blade is not the easiest to sharpen but holds an edge well and resists stains and rust. The blade geometry is fantastic. I have even filleted and skinned fish with ease using this knife. Yes, skinned fish. Flathead skin beautifully with this knife. It’s not ideal and the blade is too stiff but it works. I really like that the whole knife is rounded and smooth without sharp edges. You can reach your thumb over the top of the finger guard for more control and precise work without bruising or cutting the skin of your hand. The sheath is good quality leather. I applied leather dressing as it was very dry and undernourished out of the box. The design of the sheath and retention system make drawing the knife a slow and somewhat cumbersome process. Returning the knife to the sheath is also annoying and I tend to not do up the press stud if I know I am going to use the knife again quickly. I suspect I will forget to secure the press stud one day and lose the knife as a result. That’s my problem not Bucks. The knife itself is beautifully balanced and makes you feel like throwing it. It’s not sharp out of the box but the basic bevel is good and can be sharpened to shaving sharp with some effort. I get annoyed when knife makers don’t bother to sharpen their blades properly. It seems to demonstrate a lack of respect for their blades. If it’s good steel take some pride and sharpen the edge properly. Don’t just bang it through a grinder and go yep that’s good enough. I recommend people reading this review buy this knife. If for no other reason than to collect an icon. If you want a working, do most jobs knife, the Buck 119 would be a great desert island choice.
